Mission
MachenTagar Research Institute conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of accommodation studies, legal technology, veterans’ transition, housing policy, and AI ethics. The Australian entity extends this mission to serve communities navigating Australian institutional systems – from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to state civil and administrative tribunals.
We exist to ensure that the tools and knowledge produced by research reach the people who need them – not just the institutions that can afford them.
The Institute
MachenTagar Research Institute Pty Ltd is the Australian entity of an independent research institute with operations spanning North America and the Asia-Pacific region. The parent research program produces peer-reviewed scholarship, forensic-grade digital tools, and open methodologies across fourteen academic disciplines.
The Australian office focuses on:
- Veterans’ advocacy – DVA claims, rehabilitation, pension entitlements, Gold Card and White Card eligibility under the VEA and MRCA
- Housing policy – tenancy law across Australian states and territories (NCAT, VCAT, QCAT, SACAT, ACAT)
- Legal technology – forensic-grade tools adapted for Australian legislation
- Privacy compliance – Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) under the Privacy Act 1988
- AI ethics – responsible AI frameworks aligned with Australian Government AI Ethics Principles
Core Values
The Banting Principle
Institutions pay. People are free. Always.
Named for Sir Frederick Banting, who sold the insulin patent for one dollar because he believed life-saving discoveries should be accessible to everyone. Every MachenTagar tool, publication, and methodology follows this principle. Veterans, tenants, First Nations communities, and individual researchers access the platform at no cost. Institutional licensing funds the work.
Forensic-Grade Standards
All MachenTagar tools and research outputs are built to forensic evidentiary standards. SHA-256 cryptographic hashing, APPs-compliant data handling, timestamped provenance chains, and local-first architecture ensure that every output is verifiable, defensible, and privacy-preserving.
First Nations Data Sovereignty
All MachenTagar tools and methodologies are provided free, in perpetuity, to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nations and communities. Full data sovereignty is guaranteed under the principles outlined in the CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance and the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. First Nations communities retain complete control over their data, their narratives, and their use of any MachenTagar resource. No exceptions.

- Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986 (VEA) and Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004 (MRCA) – veterans’ benefits and entitlements
- Privacy Act 1988 – Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) for data handling
